A candidatura de Lara Cavalcanti, pelo Partido Liberal (PL), enfrenta momentos difíceis em Petrolina. Apesar de evitar admitir publicamente, Lara não teve autonomia na escolha de seu vice, o Professor Welinton Santos, membro da Assembleia de Deus na cidade. A indicação foi feita por Anderson Ferreira, presidente do PL em Pernambuco, sem consultar a candidata.
Além disso, o ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro, figura mais proeminente do PL, chegou hoje a Pernambuco, mas não visitará Petrolina. Apesar de o município ter sido um dos mais beneficiados com investimentos do seu Governo, a ausência de Bolsonaro é interpretada como um sinal de descrédito em relação ao projeto do PL em Petrolina, sugerindo que ele não acredita na viabilidade da vitória de Lara no principal município do Sertão.
